I bought my first boat in September of 2024. A 1966 O’Day Daysailer 17’. My father-in-law and I drove down from Lake Bruin, for what would become his last road trip, and bought it from a 75 year old man in Baton Rouge named Gary Lauve. Gary said he bought it 25 years ago from the original owner who raced her for over 30 years.

Whitcapping with Austin

5kn-20kn Swirling from W, N, E. I wanted to get Austin in the boat for his first sailboating experience. So we went out during the only window available. It was NOT pleasant. Came back to dock wet (from nervous sweating). Austin lost his hat in a gust and I should have practiced MOB training. The one most beautiful moment was when we were close hauled and a big spray came over the bow and doused him and he turned back to me and shouted, “HELL YEAH!”

New Boom rig with Dee

Beautiful day with 7-12 kn. I decided to leave behind the trolling motor as it was just getting in the way. We sailed on all points tacking including wing on wing running (though without a whisker pole). Still no jibes yet and no spinnaker (soon!) We were coming in way too hot and I asked Dee to haul down the main. She got it part way down and said it was stuck. I told her to quickly haul down the jib. It was all kind of messy, but we docked softly all covered up in glorious sails!

Broken Mast with Dee

The wind was very light (3 to 5 kn.) we left the dock very very slowly and made our way to the floating red crab floaty. We drifted around for a long time with the wind never really picking up and eventually just switched over to the trolling motor. When we came back to the dock, I made the boneheaded mistake of coming up on the Windward side of the dock (even though the wind was very very light). When we got about 3 feet from the dock, a gust of wind came up and blew the mast over the dock and snapped it off at the hinge.

First time sailing for Dee and I.

7- 10 mph North breeze. Initially, I let us drift into the neighboring dock. Once dee got us pushed off, it was easy sailing (just like I had seen on hours and hours of Youtube!) George insisted on a pontoon escort that eased some of the first-time jitters. Came in hot and docked perfectly. I also noticed when I look back on the pictures, that I forgot to lift the trolling motor. I must have had a lot of other things on my mind!
