The RYA Day Skipper Practical Course will advance your skills of pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a cruising yacht by day in tidal and non-tidal waters. You will be learning all these skills in the busy tidal waters of the Solent. You have learned about tidal heights and tidal streams, memorised your buoys and their light characteristics so where better to put all that knowledge into practise ? The Solent has it all, you will be visiting beautiful little harbours both on the mainland and on the Isle of Wight with some great pilotage opportunities. Nomad Sailing are committed to ensuring you will be a confident, competent and happy Skipper looking forward to your first charter or flotilla. Do your practical sailing course in one of the most famous sailing areas in the world with one of the best sailing schools.

RYA Day Skipper Practical Course Itinerary

Why We Love This Sailing Course

Five days in the Solent where everything you’ve learned suddenly has to work in the real world. Busy tidal waters, constant decision-making and the quiet shift from “learning” to actually taking charge.

1

Departure from Gosport Marina

Popular marina on the western edge of Portsmouth harbour with good rail and ferry connections to London and easy access to the Solent

2

Sailing from Gosport Marina to Cowes

Famous throughout the world as the home of yachting in the UK. The Fastnet race starts from here and the famous Cowes week. Interesting pilotage into the river and past the chain very, some great opportunities for mooring practise and ferry gliding to name but a few

3

Sailing from Cowes to Hamble

Busy, popular river just at the bottom of Southampton Water. The Hamble boasts 5 marinas and numerous river pontoons with over 5500 boats in the river in total. This makes for good pilotage and knowledge of collision regs.

4

Sailing from Hamble to Southampton

A few choices of marina to chose from up here, our preferred is Southampton Town Quay. Great sailing to be had up and down Southampton water and more than a little chance of seeing large container ships, cruise liners, ferries and much more.

5

Sailing from Southampton to Lymington

6

Sailing from Lymington to Yarmouth

Yarmouth, Isles of Wight

A fabulous little town on the Isles of Wight, pretty straight forward navigation in but when the tide is running fast it can be quite tricky.

7

Return to Gosport Marina
