8-night intermediate offshore sailing holiday with Nomad Sailing
There’s something truly special about approaching land under sail — the quiet rhythm of the sea, the salt air, and the anticipation of what lies just beyond the horizon. Our 9-day sailing adventure to the beautiful Channel Islands offers exactly that: a chance to slow down, reconnect, and explore one of the most captivating cruising grounds in Europe. Departing from the south coast of England, we’ll set a relaxed course across open water to the unique blend of British and French culture that defines the islands. From rugged lesser islands of Alderney and Sark and gentle Herm to the more metropolitan St Peterport on Guernsey there's something different on every island Whether you’re an experienced sailor eager to get hands-on, or simply looking to unwind and soak up the journey, this voyage offers the perfect balance of adventure and comfort. Enjoy peaceful anchorages, picturesque harbours, and evenings spent ashore sampling fresh seafood, local markets, and island hospitality. This isn’t just a holiday — it’s a chance to experience the freedom of sailing, the beauty of the Channel Islands, and the simple pleasure of living in tune with wind and tide.
Why We Love This Sailing Holiday
A wonderful trip across the English Channel to explore the beautiful channel islands. This sailing adventure is all about learning on the job, the most natural way to unspec your sailing experience.
Busy marina on the Eastern side of Portsmouth harbour. Well connected by rail and road to London.
Alderney will likely be your first stop, essential to get the tidal streams right to enter the harbour. Pick up a mooring buoy close inside the breakwater wall if possible. A very friendly water taxi service will take you ashore where showers are available. There is a very welcoming local Yacht Club and the history on Alderney is fantastic. You can easily walk round the island in a day and the German occupation of the island is a significant part of their history with some great buildings still standing telling the history.
Sark is the smallest of the four main Channel Islands and has some lovely anchorages on the south end of the island. Anchoring overnight allows for a nice early morning dip then an explore of the Island. Sark is joined to Little Sark and no cars are allowed but if you want to explore both of the islands bikes are available for hire.
Whether coming from Alderney or from Sark there is some great navigation to work out. The tides through the Channel Islands are enormous as is the rate of the tidal streams, some careful calculations are needed. Guernsey is a great island and St Peter Port a pretty straight forward entry with all pontoons now walk ashore. Some really nice restaurants and pubs for a chill out before you set off again.
