The RYA Competent Crew Course is designed to teach the complete beginner the basics of sailing a cruising yacht. You will experience living aboard with a crew of others and really getting to know the yacht. By the end of the 5 days you will have taken the helm, hoisted the sails, learned all about the various lines on the yacht and what each line does. You will also learn to the tie the eight knots which are needed for the day to day running of the boat. This RYA Competent Crew course is for those who would like to become active crew members undertaking tasks essential to the running and sailing of the boat. So come and join us in Portsmouth on the South Coast sailing the Solent, one of the busiest and best sea areas to learn to sail.
Why We Love This Sailing Course
Five days living aboard, getting stuck in and going from “what does that rope do?” to being a genuinely useful crew member. It’s hands-on from the start, properly sociable, and the sort of week that quietly gets you hooked on sailing for good.
Busy marina on the Eastern side of Portsmouth harbour. It is easy to get to and has almost immediate access to the Solent. The harbour itself provides a great area for training in protected waters, practising picking up mooring buoys, MOB drills or just tacking and gybing
The home of yachting in the UK, this is just an example of where we may go as we enjoy sailing to lots of different locations in the Solent. There are numerous marinas to choose from and some great mooring practise to be had.
A lovely little marina on the Isle of Wight, to get down here you will experience the strong tides of the western Solent. This will probably be an upwind sail so tacking all the way, great practise and great fun.
A popular town on the main land, again plenty of marinas to chose from but Town Quay gives the opportunity to continue the already great pilotage. Important to stay in the channel here so crew need to keep their eyes open, you will also be avoiding the big ferries that transit down this narrow channel
The beautiful Beaulieu River, great navigation in and a chance to practise picking up mooring buoys for a lunch stop.
Again more than one marina to pick from but we like the Town Quay. To get there you will be sailing alongside a busy shipping channel with local ferries, Fast Cats as well as potentially container ships, oil tankers, cruise ships and much more. Crew need to keep their eyes peeled to spot what may be coming your way.
A very popular river at the bottom of Southampton water, the river boasts 5 marinas and in between these mid-river moorings. There are over 500 yachts and motor boats moored up here. The channel is narrow in places so again eyes open and collision regs at the ready.
