winds 1-2 knots with some light drizzling. the sailing was not to be. although at points we could barely sail at speed of 1 knot that was with the current. we waited for the wind but it was forecast to get less windy and it neve came. on the bright side of was finger light to trim the head sail just by holding the clew. went to ajs to socialize which was extremely busy.

BBSA Equinox Race

sunny and 75 with 2 foot seas in 10-12 knots of wind. the race was 8.5M and the start was perpendicular to the wind close to the shore line and aimed right at the g15 channel marker which was the next mark. the course continues to j and back to the start. starboard roundings we did a starboard start and got to the line in good time but were leeward of the line, heading more to the pin. part of this was because halalah to windward on port tacked but didn't have room. we had to move to leeward to avoid them and out comes the protest flag. we were able to make the line and head windward. we went for a bit and decided to tack early back to port. much of the fleet followed our lead. we were in a good position but other boats were more to windward and therefore the mark. Marge remembered the backstay and we were then able to out point living the dream. we were able to catch up but it was neck and neck. we tacked back to starboard and set up for rounding the mark. 1/2 way there and Andy wanted to tack again. this made sure we were coming into the mark tight on starboard. that worked out. we tacked one more time quickly, back to starboard and went tight for the mark. living the dream had already tacked to port to pass the mark from the other side. we got the the mark at the same time. Andy didn't go turn immediately around the mark and called starboard so living the dream would needed to tack. and oh boy did they ever lose some time. we also tacked to round the mark at the same time. that was exciting. I don't know how close we came but it was close. we started heading to j. we were on a beam reach to a broad reach. I put the pole out. note. when we lower the pole we have more room to pull the pole back which is necessary closer to a beam reach. the spinnaker boats started to catch up on this leg. we had a good view of the fleet behind us to start though. I took the pole down and we rounded j and headed for the committee boat. living the dream was catching us to windward and Andy was pointing them up to try to stop them from passing, but eventually they did and we headed up behind them to get out of the bad air. at the finish the advantage was to the rc boat. there were two spinnaker boats finishing when we did and they tried to cut us off a bit. Andy reminded them we were leeward boat and they didn't interfere. I'll have to ask Andy, because I didn't think we had overlap yet but soon would have if they turned toward us. Andy turned to cross the line and i think we got a first place. the sail back was lovely. tom took the helm. Marge took the helm. I took the helm and what a nice race and celebration on the way back. I regret not having that beer. cheers.

Andrew Spittler - What a race. It was fantastic, great crew, great synergy, good banter. (Even if we did have to get up early). Oh, and top notch sail trim by the Creek Water Team. 😎🥃

Willoughby race committee

11 knots of wind. cloudy skies with some rain to start. RC went off smoothly. we got out of the slip and I actually was able to through the lines on the pillng. well at least the first one. the second one landed on the friendship line. usually I suck without a boat hook. we dropped both marks in a good spot. I let down the anchor but we needed to bring it back up and reposition. brought the anchor up and took the bridle off and we did it again. we ended up in a good spot with a nice starting line (and spinnaker finish line) we had 10 boats racing. i was sighting for OCS at the start while Karl and Nancy did the flags. no one over early but courageous joined late and started as soon as they could. about 1-2 minutes after the start. Karen brought some snacks while the race went on. yum 😋. at the end I was spoting the line and blowing the horn while Nancy did time and Karl recorded. that was a loud high pitched horn. hearing loss for sure. pulling up anchor the chain piled up in the locker right under the windlass and I needed to get out of the way. I did this as well when we had to re anchor. this time there was mud and sludge on the chain. yuck. Karl got me a rag, Thanks. next time I'll remember to use a boat hook to move it out of the way. we picked up the marks and headed in. it was pretty dark at this point. there was a really pretty rainbow 🌈 during the race.

sunny with 1 foot seas. winds 8-12 knots from the south. we power sailed over to thimble shoals lighthouse. I was on the b&g setting up the marks. it took us a while to find race committee but it took them longer to get set up. the race didn't go off right at 10. we made a start before the race was actually under way, then went around and did it again for real. we made the red day signal marking the port end of the line on starboard and we were under way. we tacked to stay by the shore line. I accidentally deleted the first mark but we were right on course and I figured it out on our way to the range tower. we went a little long and tacked back to starboard. no problem making the mark and we were able to bear away as we got closer. as we passed the mark we only needed to bear away a little more. we were cruising between 6 and 7 knots for the whole race. great speed. we got to thimble shoals and rounded it going to the salt ponds inlet by the beach. this put the wind on the beam or a little aft for a broad reach. we put up the pole and kept the slot open. Al took the helm and Andy helped with the up haul and sheets. Al took the helm again as we reached the mark. I got the pole down smooth. i took the up haul off first which worked well. I jumped back to the cockpit to help Andy with the jib as we rounded the mark. I was running around a lot with skirting as we were a crew of 3. next to the finish line. we were on a starboard tack and didn't want to finish on a port tack but couldn't make the line. we tacked a bit before the line but ran into traffic on port and had to tack before we wanted to. we couldn't quite pass the boat next to us and was not going to make the line. i didn't think they could either but they weren't tacking. I think we tacked and ducked behind them. there was a couple of tacks in a row and we finished. we were on front of a lot of the fleet. it was a perfect day and fast but not overpowered sailing. we sailed home and celebrated with some blueberry muffins and a beer. I helmed a part of the way home and it was nice sailing. base runner had engine issues and wanted us to standby in case she needed a tow. she did end up needing a tow. we caught a line and tied it around a astern cleat. I called the coast guard with a pan-pan to let them know we were coming into little creek harbor under tow. after getting all the information they needed they suggested using a securitee instead. it was another great day off sailing.

Thimble shoals lighthouse

winds 5-10 picking up as we crossed the bridge tunnel and headed north east. sunny and clear skies. wind was from the south with an ebb current. perfect conditions to sail to thimble shoals light house. and we finally made it. we were crossing nicely on a beam reach and went quite aways while we were talking about gibing the sails. that traveler definitely takes some work. remember to let out the main first so there isn't so much pressure on it. on the way back we saw a navy helicopter training and pulling a good sized boat out of the water with sailors on it. it was wobbling all over the place at first and then settled down. they set it down and it took off. getting her back in the slip Ray and I got the lines right away but it was hard to get the boat over to the piling to tie it off.

winds 8-12 knots. sunny and clear skies. race was KJS about 2.5 M. the line greatly favored the pin on the starboard side and was fairly close to parallel with K making it hard to determine which way to start (or finish) we got to the line right on time but there was a lot of traffic and we pulled in behind to not be involved. after crossing the line we were windward off the other boats and in good position. we ended up only being behind Arberia. on the start Arberia was windward boat and pushed widow out of the way instead of giving way and going around. there was no protest but there should have been. this is the second week in a row. we tacked toward k and had plenty of room and didn't have to point hard. maybe we could have tacked a little earlier but we probably got more speed a little off the wind. after rounding k we eased the sails and headed toward j. we got the pole out and went wing on wing. we had to turn towards starboard a bit and gybed both sails. putting the pole up and gybing went smoothly but there was some acrobatics i had to do in order to get on the correct side of the pole. we had good speed on both legs and were moving well again only behind Arberia and catching her a bit. at j we took the pole down and trimmed the sails in. we had no clue which was the coarse side of the finish line as again it was pretty parallel to the JS layline. Andy called over the radio and I took the helm. we had to keep rc to port. meanwhile I was slowly bearing away by accident. whoops. Andy got back and took the helm and straightened us out. we tacked to get into position for the finish. we tacked behind Arberia in good position and crossed the line. it was such a nice day and sail we just kept on going.

Chesapeake Bay fun sail

winds 5-10 and variable. perfectly clear skies with visibility forever. seas 1 foot. race was LKS to starboard. 3M. let's start off by saying Beth was on fire tonight 🔥. thanks for the entertainment. we had a decent start but had traffic to contend with. we didn't have room and had to go around and duck behind Arberia. heading out to L we were holding our own but black widow was out pointing the fleet. set free had a good start but we were keeping her in sight. a lot of boats tacked and we waited a bit longer. none of those boats made it. we almost made it but needed to tack as well. we went well past the mark before tacking. there was traffic all around the mark as well. after rounding the mark we were on a run and put out the jib with a pole on port. not my best work with the pole. we changed course a bit or the wind came more from behind and I switched the pole to wing on wing. also not as smooth as it could be but not terrible. we switched to get the main on starboard and switched the jib to stay wing on wing. switching the pole was smooth. 3rd times the charm for me. it was hard keeping the jib full and I was making sure we didn't accidentally gybe the main. we were catching and passing a lot boats on this leg. we passed set free as well but then ended up in there wind shadow and they went by us at the zone. rounding the mark we took the pole down and headed up and sheeted in. we had to do a small tack to make the line. it was a nice day and we sailed back to the inlet.

winds 12-16 with lots of gusts. partly cloudy with seas around 2 feet. pretty calm for hurricane Erin being off shore. sail plan was a reefed main and the 155 Genoa. before the race we wisely changed to the 135 Genoa. thanks Beth tom and Susan for getting that done. I'm sure you got soaked on the bow. the race was set as LSLS which was windward leeward and about 6M. I had us turn towards the start early and we had to slow down before the start. we were at the right place at the right time but not at full speed. set free came up on our leeward side at the start and immediately pushed us up. technically the can't establish overlap and immediately impinge on our ability to maneuver. we were keeping up with the fleet on a starboard tack in strong winds looking good. we started losing ground towards the end on that tack and we tacked to port. we had a lot of traffic around l and had to watch out since we were coming in on a port tack. luckily one boat that was coming for us gybed to port making us leeward boat and we made them duck behind us. we rounded L and headed downwind to the committee boat. we brought out the pole and put the Genoa out to port. changed later to go wing on wing. the uphaul got wrapped around some lines. I needed to figure out how to better move the pole. we passed whisper along the way going much faster. Dan was exuberant getting his crew to put up their pole which was some entertainment. towards the finish we weren't 💯 if the course was shortened. I took down the pole but it was wrapped in the lazy and now active jib sheet. I have to figure this out so I can be quicker and smoother. we finished at the pin which was favored and headed for home.

Andrew Spittler - Well, per Willoughby Spit WDSV2, winds out of East 13-15kts. Closest reference for past data in the area. With winds out of the east suspect this fairly accurate. Quite the chop with Erin creeping up the coast... Great job to everyone. Good time at AJs afterwards.

fun sail

winds 5-10 with flat seas and cloudy but still sunny skies. we motored out of Willoughby and we unfurled the jib but the furler line still got out of the drum. Levi went to the bow and made sure it fed correctly. I brought out the main with the continuous mast furler line and the outhaul. it came out smooth all the way to the end. we tried to head out towards thimble shoals lighthouse. it was a broad reach today. we made it pretty far, but not much winds to get us there. coming back we made some better speed. we got to the beach between the ocean view pier and the hrbt and headed down along the beach before gibing and heading back. I got to steer us back through the channel filled with crab pots while Phil tidied up the boat. mooring went smooth with light wind pushing us away from the slip. it was a great and smooth sailing day.
