GMDSS Short Range Certificate

Very light wind, F0-2. Race was delayed and almost cancelled. X-H-M-J-B was the course but was shortened to finish at J (G5). Long race where we were dead in the water a bit after passing M and were 4th of 4 occasionally but recovered in the end and came in a fairly close second. Handling was decent with the only major issue being some mistakes (mostly by me) on raising the spin rounding H (“SR”) but got a chance later in the race to learn spin pole management a little. Firt time sailing with Will. Great sailing with Pat and Liz again.

Chicken Little

Nice job Artic Tern! I was on Chicken Little yesterday (Sat). 

Bumpy and wet. Was raining when we set off but cleared later on. Stayed much cooler than Saturday. Winds 4/5 S-SSW. Maybe gusts to 6. Swells were pretty steady. Race was course 3: R2, 87, 86, R2. Almost the reverse of Saturday but without the swing over to SR. 

Position: Railmeat and occasional nav input. 

Stayed with the pack the first leg and most of the second. Started losing touch with the leaders 2/3rds down 2nd leg. Rounded 86 for the run back to R2 in 5th. Didn’t raise the spin. Finished pretty well behind the rest.

Arctic Tern

Decent winds. 4/5. Didn’t seem overpowered. Race was:

  Finish at R”2” (Mark X) (s)

Finished 6th of 6, but was close at the end.

2025-05-03 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series - Annapolis (Saturday)

Nice day. Practice with new crew member. Broke the spinnaker pole shortly after raising it. 

2025-04-13 Practice for HH/SW Regatta 

Second race of the day on Arctic Tern (Cal 25), with H, Jim, and Jay. 

Stayed with the leaders on both the first and second legs. Didn’t keep up after the downwind mark. Waited too long make a full corner, same as the mistake in the first race. Didn’t tack on any headers so just kept driving further away from the finish. Wound up last of the boats that sailed (some of the Cal25 fleet had packed it in after the first race and were forfeits in the 2nd.)

Weather was fine all day. Not too cold. High winds, but not unmanageable. We’d started with a reefed main and the 100% instead of the genoa, but shook out the reef going downwind. 

2025-03-09 Frostbite Series 2 Race 8

Aboard the Arctic Tern after a couple of months that I wasn’t available to crew. Filling in temporary for William D. 

H at helm, Jay and I were jibs, and Jim Carney was mainsheet. 

I still can’t figure out good placement. I get complaints about not having my weight far enough forward, but when I am in the hatch, I get in H’s way on the tacks. 

We did not start well and waited too long to tack back up the river on the last leg. Somehow still managed 3rd. 

Broke for lunch at EYC. Chili. 

2025-03-09 Frostbite Series 2 Race 7

Arctic Tern with H, Jim, and Jay. Better start than first race. Stayed close with the class, gaining on the downwind. Some sort of issue between three of the boats ahead of us in the home leg allowed us to slip by into 3rd place. I was still starboard jib sheet.

Arctic Tern with H, Jim, and Jay. Challenging start. Almost caught up on downwind leg. Hit by a boat in another class (Marilyn ?) at the downwind mark. Finished last. I was starboard jib sheet, but didn’t feel like I did particularly well at it today.
