The Canadian wildfire brought the haze to the NE, with the AQI reaching 120 or so. The visibility was not impacted but the air quality was harsh. The southerly in the 10-15 knots range minimized the need for tacking and jibing as we headed out the harbor, but we rigged the main to the second reefing line in anticipation of gusts up 30 knots. The actual wind was not so bad, but it shifted quite a bit especially on the return leg of the sail. We returned earlier than expected because the boom pin (securing boom to the mast) wasn't secure enough.

Had to motor out to Castle Island to raise the sail. Sailed to Spectacle and returned on sail following the traffic pattern. motored the last hour or so, and checked out all the tall ships in the inner harbor as well. learned how to lock the engine swivel function! why wasn't this covered in the class?

The Tallships are in town! saw three at dock and three more coming in. perfect breezy westerly around 5-7 knots. the boat traffic wasn't as bad as I thought but a lot of powerboats were on a speeding frenzy. This was the first time sailing for the Chus. Dan was very helpful during sailing raising/lowering and he also learned how to tack on the tiller. no mail sail to give more lounging space for the kids. both kids got to steer around the harbor.

A very calm day in the harbor, both in terms of boat traffic and wind. A very mild westerly ranging 5-7 knots made it a perfect day to take Shyam on his first day. Having a jib furler makes Plover so much easier to launch and wrap up. Shyam learned the basics of sailing physics, tacking, jibing, and steering. Having two crew would have been more fun, but having limited hands on deck makes you more aware and resourceful as a skipper.

first family outing on a J/27. expected light wind so prepared a Genoa, but it was plenty windy out there with the kids, so sailed with just a main. looped around Long Island. Kristen is in good conditions. working VHF but the main sail slug gets stuck easily when raising the sail.

crewed for Louise, along with Marie-Claire, Kaj, and Tommy. calm wind around 5 knots, but had sudden strong gusts around 27 knots on the way back. first time sailing past the deer island point. Kestrel had issues with the wheel (locking up when turning) and reef line clutch. the nav system also didn't show the boat position, depth, and speed.

mild easterly for the first half of the trip. the wind slowed down as we tacked around Long Island. sailed down wind wing on wing on the way back, but had to motor sail for the last 20 minutes. Barry Perlman captained the boat. John, Eric, Feizal, and I crewed, all taking turns at the helm.

last day of the season. continued our spinnaker practice from the previous day. certainly better than practicing in the Charles. going beam reach with the spinnaker up was more challenging than expected as it adds much more heel to the boat also causes strong weatherhelm. tied up to a mooring ball at Peddocks to took a break before returning.
