Low wind afternoon right after a downpour. Tony and Andrew joined for the first time and learned the basics. Hove-to for a snack break and motor sailed back in. Learned that the toping lift line can be manually adjusted to being the boom higher. the bow hatch is also not closing properly and the jib line can get stuck while tacking. the vhf also doesn't seem to work.

Light air but some pressure out near Spectacle. Crew weight to leeward. Flying the # 1 like a 120 or something? Cars mid track and inners high middle low all breaking evenly. Outer middle seemed to break up when all others streaming . No track adjustment or halyard tension adjustment made. Wind was out of the west to start but clocked more north I think later .

Slow wind below 5 kts eventually down to 1 or so. First day for the two crew. Montana seems to have some issue with the bilge pump and the main sail slug is stickier than the last time. avoid until both issues are addressed. also get a table for the propane tank weight. the sail track was manually added.

Left the Scituate harbor after breakfast and raised our spinnacker as we head NNW. Lowered the spinnacker we as started heading back west. The wind direction was in our favor and we didn't need to tack or jibe throughout the entire time (except when we hove-to). Top speed near 7.2 kt. Also noticed a sunfish fin on the way.

Day 2 of ASA 104 3-day trip. Started the morning with anchoring practice and dinghy training at Peddocks, and left for Scituate after lunch. Wind direction was not in our favor on the eastbound leg of the trip, and we had to tack more that we wanted and constantly cheat to head up as much as possible. Steve spotted a pilot whale after we pass the Boston Light. Moored in Scuituate harbor for the night and had dinner on land.

Day 3 of ASA104. First day of our 3-day trip to Scuituate. Steady wind around 8-10 kt in the harbor until the airport bridge, and gradual decrease down to 3 kts or so. Started motorsailing once we got to Spectacle. Practiced reefing on the leeward side of Peddocks, and moored at the Portuguese Bay. We rotated our roles ever 30 mins throughout the trip.

Second day of ASA104. went over the boat systems and practiced making tight turns, grabbing mooring balls, and using prop wash/walk. also saw a seal by the sailing center.

The Canadian wildfire brought the haze to the NE, with the AQI reaching 120 or so. The visibility was not impacted but the air quality was harsh. The southerly in the 10-15 knots range minimized the need for tacking and jibing as we headed out the harbor, but we rigged the main to the second reefing line in anticipation of gusts up 30 knots. The actual wind was not so bad, but it shifted quite a bit especially on the return leg of the sail. We returned earlier than expected because the boom pin (securing boom to the mast) wasn't secure enough.

Had to motor out to Castle Island to raise the sail. Sailed to Spectacle and returned on sail following the traffic pattern. motored the last hour or so, and checked out all the tall ships in the inner harbor as well. learned how to lock the engine swivel function! why wasn't this covered in the class?

The Tallships are in town! saw three at dock and three more coming in. perfect breezy westerly around 5-7 knots. the boat traffic wasn't as bad as I thought but a lot of powerboats were on a speeding frenzy. This was the first time sailing for the Chus. Dan was very helpful during sailing raising/lowering and he also learned how to tack on the tiller. no mail sail to give more lounging space for the kids. both kids got to steer around the harbor.
