9-12 knots, 11-14 knot gusts, E. It was a great day to play in puffs and sharpen skills on mainsheet, jib sheets, reading water, maneuvering around lots of traffic (anchored and moored boats, kayakers/swimmers and busy channels, cargo ships etc). Steve grabbed the helm around Goat Island and did a lot of tacking and jibing and is more confident with the mainsheet as well.

Three adults with special needs and one assistant. Steve as crew. Very light wind in mooring field and wind picked up once we got out in the bay. Lots of fishing vessels and ferries and a bit of waves. We stayed decently close by and practiced on the helm and tacks and jibes with the jib out. One gentleman was very heavy and didn’t want to move much, so he sat comfortably towards the front/center..a little off starboard side, which helped leaving the mooring field. We all had fun on “team sugar shack”. A younger woman was a natural at the helm and the other the gentleman just wanted to relax and watch. SailMaine was happy and invited us back anytime. Steve and I had fun!

This test included tacks and jibes, heaving to, man overboard drills a few times, reefing and shaking out reef while under way, close-quarter maneuvering around moorings and other boats and grabbing a mooring successfully all while answering questions about navigation, anchoring etc, and proper communication with crew. This test is way more than what Sail Newport does! I miss these boats! Sail Newport sold them to SailMaine so it was great to be back on! Now I’m certified for two summers in case I’m ever back. Conditions were a bit puffy with light to moderate wind; NW. On land, I had to tie 4 knots, read a chart correctly and do a bearing on a compass.

Car track line snapped on port side. Coolant system issues; Engine purging coolant and seawater; funneled liquid into water jugs. Engine overheated despite efforts. Sailed almost directly to the dock.

Switched to a smaller jib underway due to heavier winds. Engine issues from East Greenwhich detected and ran a lower RPM to Newport. Didn’t make the line in time. Raced anyway; came in last. Crazy storm overnight at Cuttyhunk.
