The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course is the next step in advancing from being a Day Skipper to becoming a more confident and competent navigator and sailor. Learn more advanced skippering techniques and undertake longer coastal passages by day and night.
This is where things step up and you start running proper coastal passages, often at night and in more testing conditions. You come away sharper, more confident, and ready to take charge when it really matters.

Whether it is exploring the Caribbean Islands, racing around the Fastnet Rock, learning what on earth all this sailing malarky is on about, or just watching the sun go down with a cold beer/gin/wine. Sailing is an excellent facilitator of all of these. LSS was conceived in 2014, by our founder Ruaraidh Plummer. Inspired by instructing hundreds of Yacht and Dinghy training courses and seeing how the majority of students rarely put it into practice before forgetting everything. After teaching dinghy sailing in Vassiliki for 6 years and seeing how receptive people are to learning in a friendly environment, we’ve set out to help sailors learn from the ground up. LSS merged with Equinox Sailing in 2017 and was reborn from the success of this partnership in 2019, to better serve our community.
LSS have a knack for bringing in excellent instructors to run their certificated courses. They’re friendly and approachable, but also bring real depth of knowledge backed up by broad, real-world sailing experience.

Depending on the weather and tides, you will spend most nights somewhere different in the Solent and Jurassic Coast
You will usually be on your way home by 17:00 on your final day

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is 5 days long and building on previous experience, you will learn to prepare and plan coastal passages, and how to navigate at night and in restricted visibility. Develop your boat handling skills under sail and engine with more challenging situations. Learn to handle a boat in adverse weather and how to recover a man overboard under sail. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone by the instructor who will demonstrate, teach, and allow you to learn from and mistakes you make while practising. The course is a taught assessment with the students passing if the instructor is happy that all requirements have been met during the 5 days.
