The RYA Competent Crew course is an entry-level course for beginner sailors. Enjoy a fun 5 days sailing around the Solent, learning the parts of the boats, how to tie knots, sail trim, and many other nautical seamanship skills.

Whether it is exploring the Caribbean Islands, racing around the Fastnet Rock, learning what on earth all this sailing malarky is on about, or just watching the sun go down with a cold beer/gin/wine. Sailing is an excellent facilitator of all of these. LSS was conceived in 2014, by our founder Ruaraidh Plummer. Inspired by instructing hundreds of Yacht and Dinghy training courses and seeing how the majority of students rarely put it into practice before forgetting everything. After teaching dinghy sailing in Vassiliki for 6 years and seeing how receptive people are to learning in a friendly environment, we’ve set out to help sailors learn from the ground up. LSS merged with Equinox Sailing in 2017 and was reborn from the success of this partnership in 2019, to better serve our community.
LSS have a knack for bringing in excellent instructors to run their certificated courses. They’re friendly and approachable, but also bring real depth of knowledge backed up by broad, real-world sailing experience.

Depending on the weather and tides, you will spend most nights somewhere different in the Solent, from Yarmouth to Portsmouth

The RYA Competent crew course is 5 days long and at the end, you will have a basic overview of the workings of the yacht to allow you to be a valuable member of the crew. During the course, you will be taught seamanship, personal safety, beginner sail trim and helming techniques. By sleeping & living onboard during the course, you will naturally pick up on the workings of the interior and domestic workings of boat life. The course will be taken with up to 5 students and the instructor on the boat, we do offer courses for private groups, however. Many see the course as a holiday in that while learning new skills, you are also exploring different harbours and locations around the Solent and South Coast. During the course, we aim to sleep in different harbours or anchorages each night, but the weather and tides sometimes make these decisions for us!
Your specific vessel is assigned based on your selected dates. All vessels meet our high standards for comfort and safety.
