Ten days. Five islands. One exceptional yacht. From Rodney Bay to the Tobago Cays and back under the stars—this is Caribbean sailing as it was meant to be experienced. Set sail from the vibrant marina of Rodney Bay in Saint Lucia for a 10-day blue-water adventure through the heart of the Grenadines aboard a legendary Swan 51—a yacht celebrated worldwide for its craftsmanship, seaworthiness, and racing pedigree. Designed by Nautor’s Swan, the Swan 51 is renowned for exceptional performance and ocean-proven reliability.
Ten days in the Grenadines on a Swan 51, which is about as close as sailing gets to doing it properly. Proper sailing by day, rum and turquoise water by night, and just enough time in the Tobago Cays to wonder why you’d ever leave.
Southern Ocean Company and Swan 51 “Eira" Southern Ocean Company was founded in the first years of the new century but basically restarted in 2009 when shares got redivided among a new set of owners. The mission was to purchase a yacht capable of doing long transatlantic voyages, housing large crews and put it out “on the trade". After considering a number of options the decision fell in favour of a proven design, the Swan 51, and the optimal version, the alternative one layout with its additional crew space. The search started immediately. After viewing several potential boats one stuck out, the hull 009 for sale in Sweden. She had previously done several seasons in the Caribbean and was already equipped for long hauls. Her general condition was also good, or as the surveyor from Nautor loosely put it – “she’s pretty much the same boat that rolled out of the factory in 1981”.
Seb and his Swan 51, Eira, have been part of the charter racing scene since 2009. On board you’ll find the right balance of competitive racing and a friendly, welcoming crew. Between regattas, Eira runs some excellent sailing itineraries as she moves between race venues.
After a welcome briefing and provisioning complete, we depart Rodney Bay and set a southerly course. As the iconic Pitons fade on the horizon, the Caribbean opens before us. The Swan 51 comes alive in trade-wind conditions—balanced, responsive, and exhilarating.
Landfall in charming Bequia, the northern gateway to the Grenadines. Admiralty Bay offers calm anchorage and a warm island welcome. Explore Port Elizabeth’s waterfront cafés, local markets, and maritime heritage. Bequia retains the authentic character of old-world Caribbean yachting culture.
A short sail south to exclusive Mustique, known for understated luxury and pristine beaches. Anchor in Britannia Bay and enjoy powder-white sands and crystalline waters. Sunset cocktails, or perhaps dinner, at the legendary Basil’s Bar are optional—but highly recommended.
We sail into the protected marine park of the Tobago Cays—arguably the crown jewel of the Caribbean. For three unforgettable days: – Snorkel vibrant coral reefs and swim with sea turtles – Paddleboard over turquoise shallows – Enjoy beach barbecues under starlit skies – Experience total disconnection in a setting of extraordinary natural beauty The horseshoe reef shelters tranquil anchorages, creating perfect conditions for swimming and relaxation.
We continue south to Carriacou, part of Grenada. Known as the “Island of Reefs,” Carriacou offers superb snorkeling and a laid-back atmosphere. Explore Hillsborough village, walk quiet beaches, or simply enjoy a peaceful evening at anchor.
A longer passage northbound. This is a true sailor’s day—trim sails, take the helm, and experience the Swan 51 in her element. Steady trade winds and open water make for rewarding blue-water sailing.
We begin our return passage to St Lucia in the afternoon, continuing through the night. Night sailing in the Caribbean is unforgettable: steady breeze, phosphorescence in the wake, and a sky filled with stars. Under the capable command of our professional skipper, you’ll experience offshore sailing at its most magical.
We make landfall back in Rodney Bay by morning. Breakfast onboard and disembarkation, carrying memories of ten extraordinary days under sail.
