Canal de Los Barcos, Cuba to Isla Mujeres Outer Banks, Mexico

10-18 knots true wind from the SE. 2-5 ft waves on side. Gulf Stream offered up to 5 knots of current causing a motor sail steer to heading of 30 degrees. Slowed speed by over 2 knots averaging 4.7 to 5 knots. Motor sailed for most of the trip due to 10 knot winds on the beam at night and then strong current.

Ernest Hemingway Marina (Havana) to Canal de Los Barcos, Cuba

Wind 5-18 knots true from east with 2-4 foot waves. Began with winds from behind 170 degrees on a run. Traveling 7 knots until about midnight when wind died and changed to SE. motor sailed from midnight to noon. Bokensha and Nova Star were in anchorage ahead of us and began motoring at 7am 12 miles ahead of us. We were able to turn engines off with wind on the beam at noon at 11-15 knots true wind. Apparent wind switched to close haul sail with 22-24 knots and a reef was placed. The wind forecast did not predict these winds. We turned upwind about 2 hours before anchorage in which was a bashing of close together 2-3 foot waves. Anchored in a calm river like setting with lots of mosquitoes. Kept all quarters shut with AC on. Saw large fish swimming on surface-probably a tarpon. Caught a barracuda during the sail without noticing. Still alive and released.

Key West, Fl to Marina Gavoita Veradero, Cuba

Wind 18-23 knots apparent from east. Close hauled sail in 3-6 ft waves. Averaging 7 knots and lovely sail with Bokensha and Novastar in follow. Others slowed down by reefing for Novastar and job away for Bokensha. We decided to continue at current speed of 7-8 knots since crossing the Gulf Stream. About 10 nm from the destination, had to slow down to avoid entering the marina at night. Sails away and motored in rough seas for 4 hours going back west in very uncomfortable conditions. Arrived in the morning daylight without issue with immigration waiting for us. A doctor interviewed us and immigration inspected the boat asking for a present after.
